Robert Laidlow is AI+ Fellow in Department of Music and King’s AI Institute

Robert Laidlow has joined King’s College London as an AI+ Fellow in the Department of Music in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. AI+ Academic Fellowships provide 3 years of 80:20 focussed research time and AI-informed education programme development time at the King’s AI Institute. In 3 years, subject to review, the position will gradually transition over 2 years to an academic post.

Robert develops creative tools and methodologies for composers using AI. He also collaborates with leading data scientists to apply advanced technologies to his compositions. In his words,

My compositional research focusses on developing and deploying artist-led creative technologies (including AI, video game technologies and improvising machines) that empower creativity. It positions live musical performance as a valuable space for reflecting on and challenging our relationship with emerging technologies.

Before joining King’s, Dr. Laidlow was a Fellow in Composition at Jesus College at Oxford University. Previously, he was at the RNCM Centre for Practice & Research in Science & Music (PRiSM) where he was the PhD Researcher in Artificial Intelligence with the BBC Philharmonic.

Robert received a BA in Music at Emmanuel College at Cambridge University, an MMus at the Royal Academy of Music, and a PhD in Composition at the Royal Academy of Music.
