Title : Room impulse response measurements

Abstract : Room impulse response measurements are a tale as old as time – but do we do them right? Currently, this question is more relevant than ever, with the ever-growing need for data used in machine learning. This talk will showcase and discuss methods to make acoustic measurements more efficient, while ensuring high quality RIRs. We will start by learning how to make sure that the measurement is free of random noises, and what to do if this cannot be achieved. Then, we will see how to post-process the recorded RIRs to minimize the error in parameter estimation coming from the background noise. the talk will conclude by showing what RIRs can tell us about the room they were measured in, but we did not think to ask.

Speaker : Karolina Prawda is a Lecturer in Audio Engineering at the AudioLab, University of York. She received her PhD in Signal Processing and Acoustics from Aalto University in Espoo, Finland, where she also worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Acoustics Lab from 2022 to 2024. Her research interests include all aspects of reverberationβ€”from measurement and analysis to synthesis. She is currently focused on extracting as much information as possible from room acoustic measurements.
